I love a man with a sense of humour and Elliot Erwitt, as well as being a phenomenal photo-journalist, had masses of it! He is quoted as saying:
“To me, photography is an art of observation, it’s about finding something interesting in an ordinary place. I’ve found it has little to do with the things you see and everything to do with the way you see them.”
Elliot Erwitt has a great eye for seeing quirky moments and capturing them. His way of working is to head out into the street and see what interests or amuses him and then return to pull together themes from the photos he has taken, rather than the more common approach of having a theme or project in mind before going out to shoot it. Personally, I find I work better with a focus (excuse the pun!) or purpose for when I take my camera out, but I hope I remain open for something random and interesting that presents itself.
One of my favourite shots is this image of a couple of dogs and their owner, one of many he has shot on this theme – all are superb and very humorous. I love that you have to look twice before you realise whose legs you are looking at! Genius observation.
